Materials Discovery

Materials Discovery is a new multidisciplinary forum for researchers of all disciplines within the materials science community that is designed as scholarly link between the materials sciences and information sciences, and provides the foundation for advancing materials science knowledge by extracting and exploiting information from "big data".

Materials Discovery aims to promote all aspects of the emerging field of Materials Informatics and the scope includes, but is not limited to, the use of informatics or data intensive experiments and computations as applied to:

  • the discovery and design of new materials and/or microstructures;
  • advancing knowledge and theoretical understanding of materials processes and /or mechanisms governing materials behavior;
  • understanding the nature of data collection and generation in both experimental and computational studies; and
  • methods to aid the analysis and interpretation of data and databases.

We encourage submission of articles where the fundamental issues underlying topics of data measurement, quantification and uncertainty are linked to the interpretation of materials science phenomena and characterization.

Materials Discovery publishes full-length articles, perspective and review articles. The journal supports the open data movement, and is part of the Open Data Pilot (http://www.elsevier.com/about/research-data/open-data) and encourages authors to make their data available through a repository, and facilitate re-use by making use of the open access journal Data-in-Brief (http://www.journals.elsevier.com/data-in-brief/), for a reduced fee if submitted directly through Materials Discovery.

ISSN: 0927-796XeISSN: 1879-212X
JUFO Level 2

Materials Science & Engineering R: Reports publishes invited review papers covering the full spectrum of materials science and engineering. The reviews, both experimental and theoretical, provide general background information as well as a critical assessment on topics in a state of flux. The editorial policy of Materials Science & Engineering R: Reports is to serve its readership in two ways. Firstly, it provides a critical overview of the current issues in a well-defined area of immediate interest to materials scientists. Secondly, each review contains an extensive list of references thus providing an invaluable pointer to the primary research literature available on the topic. This policy is implemented by the Editorial Board which consists of outstanding scientists in their respective disciplines. The Board identifies the topics of interest and subsequently invites qualified authors. In order to ensure speedy publication, each review is published separately.Benefits to authorsWe also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. JUFO Level 1
Materials Today Communications is a new primary research journal covering all areas of materials science.

Furthering the Materials Today mission to aid the creation and sharing of materials science knowledge and experience, Materials Today Communications offers the materials science community an innovative, efficient and flexible route for the publication of scientifically and ethically sound articles which may not always find the right home on first submission. Our highly experienced and well-respected editorial team, composed of Editors and Editorial Board members from across Elsevier's materials science journals, ensure that all papers are rigorously and fairly peer-reviewed.

Peer-reviewed articles that meet the standards of quality set by the Editors and Referees of our sister journals, but which were considered unsuitable for publication in those journals, will be automatically accepted for publication in Materials Today Communications without resubmission or additional review*. Rapid publication of accepted articles is achieved using article-based, online publishing to ensure each paper is visible to the community as quickly as possible.

Materials Today Communications publishes original research papers of any length, and follows a hybrid publication model, providing authors with the option to publish their papers Open Access for a fee of 1000 USD or freely via the subscription route.

*provided that the manuscript is amended according to the comments of the reviewers, and as judged by the managing editor.
